Mark André

Mark André (*1964) studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique from 1987 to 1993, where his composition teachers included Claude Ballif and Gérard Grisey. He completed his doctor’s degree (DEA) at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris, working on Ars subtilior. From 1993 to 1996 André continued his composition studies with Helmut Lachenmann at the State Music Academy in Stuttgart, where he also completed them. He studied electronic music with André Richard at the Experimental Studio for Acoustic Art.
His compositions, many of which have been commissioned by renowned orchestras and ensembles, have won several awards and stipends, including those of the Darmstadt Summer Courses (Kranichstein Music Prize 1996), the Schloss Solitude Academy, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the City of Stuttgart, Baltreit (Baden-Baden), Villa Medici in Rome (1999-2001), the Frankfurt Opera (2001), the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation (Encouragement Award 2002), the Christoph and Stephan Kaske Prize (2006) and the Gigahertz Production Prize (2007). In 2005 Mark André was composer in residence of the DAAD in Berlin. He teaches at the Music Academies in Frankfurt and Strasbourg. Mark André lives in Berlin.
